Stop stressing and live a less stressed life

Stop Stressing! Steps for Living A Less Stressed Life Author: Cole Carson

Who doesn’t experience stress these days? We live in a society where we are kept constantly busy, and it’s not any secret that almost all of us experience stress at some point or another. Sometimes it feels like we have so much to do, that making one tiny stumble will cause it all to come back right on top of us.

The worst thing about stress though is not what it does to our emotions, but what it does to our bodies. Unmanaged stress can harmfully effect almost every major part of our bodies, especially our immune system and hearts. Stress can also cause depression, as well. So what can we do to help reduce stress in our lives?

Stress is actually the releasing of certain hormones into the bloodstream by the brain. It’s a natural act, designed to help our bodies work over-time to escape a dangerous situation. Our hearts beat faster and harder, our hearing increases, our lungs take in more oxygen – nearly every major system in the body is taxed to help us escape from harm. Although this is natural, prolonged stress is not, and can be extremely damaging to the body.

The first thing we have to focus on are the small things that we all let stack up on us. You know what I’m talking about – the traffic, that awful history professor, or the bratty children behind you in your favorite restaurant who think they’ve been taken to a playground. We all have to deal with these things, but it is important that you aren’t letting them get to you. They’re annoying, of course, but it’s easy to build them up into something larger than they really are, especially if you’re already in a bad mood. The thing to do: let it go. It isn’t actually a threat to you, and you’ll probably wind up laughing about it later.

You have to take control, remind yourself that it’s nothing serious, and definitely not something to get worked up about. Unfortunately, we also have to deal with much larger issues in our lives. Sometimes we are relying on a promotion at work to pay our bills, or find ourselves working overtime at our studies and not making the grades we should be. Obviously these things need to be dealt with, but we also have to be able to walk away from them. The trick is to work hard at avoiding these problems, but once you pass that point where you can no longer do any more, you must be able to set it aside.

Maybe you miss out on sleep because you are studying even when you already know the information, or maybe you are pushing your food around your plate in anxious thought about that promotion. These little things are keeping you stressed, and they aren’t helping you a bit. You need to be able to recognize when it’s time to shut the problem off, and let the card fall where they may. Ask yourself if there is anything else you can do to solve your problem. If the answer is no, rest knowing that you gave it your all. The last thing you can do is to make sure you are filling your life with joy, and not only responsibilities and deadlines.

We all have projects that must be completed, but if we schedule in time to do the things that we enjoy, we’ll love our lives and be more prepared to deal with our problems. Find those simple things in life that you live for, and plan for them as much as you can. Go on a hiking trip, or spend a lazy day in a hammock outside, build model airplanes, whatever it is that relaxes your soul and brings you peace. Doing these things can help us take our minds off of the things that stress us out. There is no way to escape stress, but fortunately, we don’t have to.

Stress itself is natural, but living in stress is not, and it isn’t something anyone has to do. If left unchecked, stress will wear away at you physically and make you ill equipped to handle your responsibilities, so slow down, take a fresh view of the world, and unwind.
