This breathing technique is one of my favorites! In the middle of the day when I am feeling tired and have trouble staying focused this is the breathing exercise I use. It helps me to stay alert and more focused.
4-4-8 Breathing Exercise- This exercise is a great one to do when you need a good “pick me up” during the day. Keep your focus!
Sit comfortably with your back straight. Relax body, mind and emotions. How are you breathing? Spend a minute or two simply observing your breath. The oxygen you breathe nourishes your body. Weak inhalations denyus the energy we need to be most productive. 70% of our waste products are eliminated through our breath; therefore short exhalations mean we are unable to release the toxins. This is why we often feel run down, crabby and sleepy. The exercise will bring enhanced clarity of thought and uplifted emotions.
Inhale deeply for four units of time. Fill your lungs completely so you can see and fill your abdomen distend.
Retain your breath for the count of four.
Exhale for eight counts.
Obtain the rhythm that feels right for you. You can’t do this wrong. When you inhale, visualize vitality and health coming into your body. When you hold to the count of four imagine perfect health and energy filling every cell in your body. Now as you exhale blow away any pain, tension, fatigue or negative emotions that you may have.
I recommended that you do three sets of twelve repetitions each whenever you need a boost of energy. You may work up to twelve sets of twelve repetitions each. This exercise is great for an afternoon break.
